More than any other single person, one man towered like a colossus over all forms of media in 1994, the subject of It Happened One Year's slam-jammingest eighth episode - Shaquille O'Neal! Sarah & Joe explain how this episode ballooned from a mere nugget of trivia into a gold rush of stories surrounding the then Orlando Magic center - from his wildly successful gold and platinum rap albums (Shaq Diesel and Shaq Fu: Da Return) to his less well-received video game, from his hit autobiography to his popular appearances with World Championship Wrestling. '94 Shaq was possibly the greatest Shaq of them all!
And no discussion of The Diesel in 1994 would be complete without a lengthy look at his co-starring role in the volcanic basketball epic Blue Chips, starring Nick Nolte, J.T. Walsh, Mary McDonnell, and Ed O'Neill! The movie's bravura showcase of slam dunks, Larry Bird's sub-par acting, Coach Bell's moral ambiguity, and the opening five minutes being possibly the greatest in film history are all given their fair due. Sarah & Joe continually butt heads over whether any of this holds together, as filmmaker Michael Moore, boxer Michael Moorer, and I.O.C. Honorary Life President Michael Morris are profiled and compared ad nauseum!
Moore's NBC show TV Nation is put into career context with The Awful Truth, Roger & Me, Fahrenheit 9/11, and more, while Moorer's six month reign as heavyweight champion through fights with Evander Holyfield and George Foreman is explored. Finally, with trademark controlled mayhem, the hosts attempt to ascertain who Michael Morris/Baron Killanin even was, and if he had any significant impact on the Lillehammer Olympics! It's a cartwheeling 1994-a-palooza with cameos from Yaphet Kotto, Cate Blanchett's Notes on a Scandal, Rocky V, Axel Schultz, and the most recycled joke in the show's short history, courtesy of Bill Hader. The gangbusters first episode of It Happened One Year has finally arrived! Sarah and Joe are kicking off their grand 1994 dissection with one of its most memorable figures, A.C. Cowlings - Former NFL defender turned accomplice in the O.J. Simpson saga! There is plenty to chew over, from A.C.'s football days to his brief acting career to his even briefer dabbling in aerobics. Between the many subsequent locations of the famed Ford Bronco to guest appearances by Bubba Smith and Marcus Allen, IHOY sheds plenty of light on one of the most widely known yet least heard from members of the '94 roll call.
As a bonus, the hosts also discuss why they happened upon 1994 for this show and unearth a test recording that validates this decision. The Bizarro World of IHOY:1917 is an adventure unto itself. Who even was Mata Hari, anyway?!
