1967 Episode 23 - Star Trek Into Comedy
Monday Dec 12, 2022
Monday Dec 12, 2022
Sarah & Joe boldly go where they've planned to go before, but never quite got around to it, with It Happened One Year's look at the original Star Trek series, specifically the season two episode "I, Mudd," airing November 3rd, 1967! After an intro by friend of the show Lana Cooper, the hosts touch on what was skipped by season one's 1994 omission of Generations and The Next Generation finale, their respective (and somewhat limited) personal exposure to the film and TV franchise, and discuss just how misogynistic (or not?) the show was in its early days. There's also a quick look at the character history of Harcourt Fenton Mudd (and his portrayer, Roger C. Carmel, with his epic mustache), and also another surprising conversation around the tight-pants epidemic prevalent on Friday night television in '67.

Thursday Dec 01, 2022
The recap of television on November 3rd, 1967 continues, with the lead program on CBS - the two-fisted steampunk western comic adventure The Wild Wild West! After an intro by friend of the podcast Kristen Gaydos, Sarah & Joe break down the show's relatively brief, memorable run in the late '60s, from the controversy over its violence to the miraculous fabric that seemingly doesn't tear during the many fights scenes. Along the way, show favorite James Gregory makes an appearance, alongside series stars Robert Conrad and Ross Martin, with additional discussions of the 1999 Will Smith feature adaptation (and that year's Razzie Awards), Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Clambake, Batman '66, and a chaotic outro in search of a fitting ending that gets way, way out there.

1967 Episode 21 - Gomer Pyle’s Impossible Dream
Monday Nov 21, 2022
Monday Nov 21, 2022
It may have no connection to NBC's Blackout Thursday promotion of 1994, but It Happened One Year is not about to let November 3rd go - and so, get ready for a three-part look at television on this random Friday in 1967! Kicking it off, on CBS at 8:30/7:30 CST, the #3 show of the season - Gomer Pyle U.S.M.C.! With an intro by legendary friend of the podcast Dave Gardon, Sarah & Joe look at the program's history, the success and failure of backdoor pilots/spinoffs, Gomer's tap dancing around the Vietnam war, Friends' handling of 9/11, and the best possible casting idea for a live TV musical. Shazam!

1967 Episode 20 - The Jungle Book at the Threshold of Armageddon
Wednesday Nov 09, 2022
Wednesday Nov 09, 2022
Surprise episode! Recorded last night in the midst of a very surprising Election Day here in America, Joe - and moreover Sarah - goes through the emotions of a rollercoaster ride for the Democrats and Republicans in what broadly could have been the final day for democracy as we know it. And all that takes place against the backdrop of a somewhat unsuccessful discussion of Disney's 1967 classic The Jungle Book, as the hosts sporadically attempt to extol the virtues of the animated musical while commenting on the returns as they roll in from across the country. With cameos from Hershel Walker, Kamala Harris, King Louie, Ron DeSantis, AOC, Beyonce, Gretchen Whitmer, Baloo, Steve Kornacki, Beto O'Rourke, Robin Hood and Little John, Chuck Grassley, Kay Ivey, JB Pritzker, Mowgli, Stacey Abrams, Colonel Hathi, JD Vance, Walt Disney, and many more, plus an intro from LBJ himself, this wild episode is one highly unlikely to be replicated (before November 5th, 2024, anyway!).

1967 Episode 18 - THE Bigfoot Sighting
Thursday Oct 20, 2022
Thursday Oct 20, 2022
Five and a half decades ago today, the famed Patterson/Gimlin Bigfoot video was captured in northern California, and It Happened One Year is there! Sarah & Joe break down all the key figures in this hoax-leaning adventure, with commentary cribbed from Hollywood make-up artists and effects specialists, theories highly probable and completely unlikely, and a shoutout to the block-of-ice Sasquatch they saw, on display at all times in Austin, TX (big ups, Museum of the Weird!). The hosts go on mental journeys from belief to disbelief, discuss supernatural creatures and their prevalence in far flung world cultures, and speculate whether the Mrs. Bigfoot from this video is a Scorpio or not.

Just in time for the playoffs! The underdog of underdog teams grabs the It Happened One Year spotlight this week, as the 1967 Boston Red Sox come out of nowhere to make their first World Series in 21 years, garnering the "Impossible Dream" nickname and potentially saving the franchise! Sarah & Joe get deep into Red Sox Nation and that '67 run - how Joe became a Red Sox fan, how the franchise and the fan base has changed since 2004, Carl Yastrzemski's Triple Crown season, the tragedy of Tony Conigliaro, the greatness of Bob Gibson, the surprise appearance of Roger Maris, and another game seven defeat in the 86-year losing drought. Along the way, some discussion of Aaron Judge's home run "record" chase, feelings about the steroid era's continuing debates, and very half-assed predictions for this year's champion ensue! Get your peanuts and Cracker Jack, folks!

Monday Oct 03, 2022
Monday Oct 03, 2022
Yes, that is actually what's going on in this episode! What starts out as a fun road episode - recording at the McHenry Outdoor Theatre Drive-In in McHenry, Illinois - devolves into something else entirely, as Austin Powers & Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me don't exactly prove to be a firm, foundational topic for this '67 podcast. Witness as Sarah & Joe struggle with wholly expected car battery related issues at a drive-in theater! Listen as they delve into other, later films set in the Summer of Love! Marvel at the amount of hamburgers and hot dogs they consume! It Happened One Year's second episode at an outdoor movie theater proves to be the best one yet. Let's all go to the movies!
