Episode 10 - One Hoax Over the Line
Monday May 24, 2021
Monday May 24, 2021
Dumb internet hoaxes didn't originate with your step-uncle getting scammed out of his social security number by Russian teenagers, heck no! This week, Sarah & Joe take us back to the early, early days of stupid nonsense people believed in cyberspace on this tenth techno-funktastic episode of It Happened One Year! 1994 saw the famed Good Times Virus burst onto the scene, followed in short order by a popular satirical news bulletin wherein Microsoft was going to purchase the Catholic Church. And if that isn't daring enough, actual cybercrime takes centerstage as super hacker Kevin Mitnick goes to prison, while prankster Zeke Shif declares "My kung fu is the best." It's a lot of technical mumbo jumbo and fancy digital doodads and whizzballs, with cameos from Bill Gates, The X-Files' Lone Gunmen, the show's first serious foray into financial advice, and no small discussion of early email accounts, web service providers, and the internet accessibility options of kids without home computers in 1994. IHOY: One Hoax Over the Line!

Monday May 17, 2021
The wheel of chance is trotted out once again for this newest Dealer's Choice episode, wherein the winner selects the topic of discussion and the loser can suck eggs. This week - 1994's dreamiest and most acclaimed romantic comedy, Four Weddings and a Funeral! Sarah & Joe go into all facets of this famed British nuptial fest - from its inventive plot structure to establishing the Hugh Grant phenomena of the mid-nineties. Along the way, Kristin Scott Thomas, Simon Callow, John Hannah, Rowan Atkinson, and Richard Curtis are given their fair due, while director Mike Newell and ostensible star Andie MacDowell are questioned at some length. Was this truly the funniest movie of '94? Or should this be classified as a comedy at all? Horns are locked and the debate is lusty in this starry-eyed ninth episode of It Happened One Year!

Episode 8 - Shaquille O’Neal: The Big Aristotle
Monday May 10, 2021
Monday May 10, 2021
More than any other single person, one man towered like a colossus over all forms of media in 1994, the subject of It Happened One Year's slam-jammingest eighth episode - Shaquille O'Neal! Sarah & Joe explain how this episode ballooned from a mere nugget of trivia into a gold rush of stories surrounding the then Orlando Magic center - from his wildly successful gold and platinum rap albums (Shaq Diesel and Shaq Fu: Da Return) to his less well-received video game, from his hit autobiography to his popular appearances with World Championship Wrestling. '94 Shaq was possibly the greatest Shaq of them all!
And no discussion of The Diesel in 1994 would be complete without a lengthy look at his co-starring role in the volcanic basketball epic Blue Chips, starring Nick Nolte, J.T. Walsh, Mary McDonnell, and Ed O'Neill! The movie's bravura showcase of slam dunks, Larry Bird's sub-par acting, Coach Bell's moral ambiguity, and the opening five minutes being possibly the greatest in film history are all given their fair due. IHOY presents, at center, 7'1" from LSU, The Big Aristotle himself - Shaquille O'Neal!

Chortle at the stunning ineptitude on display from these would-be John Wilkes Booths! And woven through the episode, the hosts touch on other lesser known assassination bids, including amazing tales of survival, revolution, and retribution concerning Teddy Roosevelt, Andrew Jackson, Harry Truman, Richard Nixon, Barack Obama, and more! Episode 4 - Michael Moore, Michael Moorer, Michael Morris
Monday Apr 19, 2021
Monday Apr 19, 2021
Tied through a loose naming convention and shaggy thematic chaos, this dazzling fourth episode explores more and more Michaels of 1994! Sarah & Joe continually butt heads over whether any of this holds together, as filmmaker Michael Moore, boxer Michael Moorer, and I.O.C. Honorary Life President Michael Morris are profiled and compared ad nauseum!
Moore's NBC show TV Nation is put into career context with The Awful Truth, Roger & Me, Fahrenheit 9/11, and more, while Moorer's six month reign as heavyweight champion through fights with Evander Holyfield and George Foreman is explored. Finally, with trademark controlled mayhem, the hosts attempt to ascertain who Michael Morris/Baron Killanin even was, and if he had any significant impact on the Lillehammer Olympics! It's a cartwheeling 1994-a-palooza with cameos from Yaphet Kotto, Cate Blanchett's Notes on a Scandal, Rocky V, Axel Schultz, and the most recycled joke in the show's short history, courtesy of Bill Hader. This week, It Happened One Year answers the age old question - is Michael Moore actually more Michael Moore than Michael Moorer? Or is that impossible??
