Episode 10 - One Hoax Over the Line
Monday May 24, 2021
Monday May 24, 2021
Dumb internet hoaxes didn't originate with your step-uncle getting scammed out of his social security number by Russian teenagers, heck no! This week, Sarah & Joe take us back to the early, early days of stupid nonsense people believed in cyberspace on this tenth techno-funktastic episode of It Happened One Year! 1994 saw the famed Good Times Virus burst onto the scene, followed in short order by a popular satirical news bulletin wherein Microsoft was going to purchase the Catholic Church. And if that isn't daring enough, actual cybercrime takes centerstage as super hacker Kevin Mitnick goes to prison, while prankster Zeke Shif declares "My kung fu is the best." It's a lot of technical mumbo jumbo and fancy digital doodads and whizzballs, with cameos from Bill Gates, The X-Files' Lone Gunmen, the show's first serious foray into financial advice, and no small discussion of early email accounts, web service providers, and the internet accessibility options of kids without home computers in 1994. IHOY: One Hoax Over the Line!
